Herrin back on top in SportBike

From AMA Pro Racing

TOOELE, UT - The rain-fraught AMA Pro Daytona SportBike contest at Miller Motorsports Park's BigM Weekend on Sunday was ruled by a five-rider pack of unrelenting ferocity, each taking his turn at the front throughout the 16-lap race. Two riders, however, rose above-one higher than he's ever been before, the other to a once-familiar height he's sorely missed in 2011.

Celtic Racing/Fast by Ferracci's PJ Jacobsen was ascendant in the 34-rider race, the 17-year-old New Yorker launching into the lead off the line and holding off attack after attack while riders diced for position eight-deep. Team Latus Motors Racing's Jason DiSalvo-who started from pole, and was coming off a three-race win streak-seemed a sure bet for frontrunner status, but he was shuffled back surprisingly early in the race by Josh Herrin (Monster Energy Graves Yamaha), Dane Westby (M4 Suzuki) and Cory West (Vesrah Suzuki).

Up front, Westby was the first rider to take the lead from Jacobsen, only to have West sail by both riders while the top seven were blanketed by less than a second. Jacobsen reclaimed the lead with authority just corners later, leaving West and Westby to engage in a frenetic battle for second that Herrin watched carefully from fourth.

With nine laps to go, Herrin began to make his move, first picking off West to settle into the third-place position. In front, Westby and Jacobsen seemed to trade the lead every other corner, neither willing to let go nor able to make a pass stick for long. Suddenly, it was fourth-place West sliding back into the lead, closing the door so hard on a hopeful attempt by Jacobsen that the latter rider was shuffled back to fourth.

Shortly after, Herrin made a quick outside pass to take second from West and began calculatingly sizing up race-leader Westby, while Westby did everything he could to discourage the Graves rider's line of thinking. In the meantime, Cameron Beaubier (GP Bike Parts) had been carefully maneuvering his way vertically through the field, and with five laps to go, had firmly attached himself to the back of the five-rider front pack, which went tearing up Miller's long front straight four-deep as the laps clicked down.

Jacobsen, however, had been doing the same at the front of the field, taking third, then second, then first positions from their previous owners in a no-holds-barred fashion that left no doubt about his talent, but some doubt about how much longer his tires would last. With Westby immediately positioning his bike on Jacobsen's rear wheel, the youngster found himself coming under increasing pressure, to which he responded by putting his head down and doing everything he could to gap the field.

With only three laps left to go, however, that didn't fit with Herrin's plans. Giving the Ducati rider zero room, Herrin pushed him faster and faster, the two putting several bike lengths between themselves and the rest of the field. Then, just after the lead pair took the white flag, Jacobsen's machine began exhibiting gasp-worthy, high-speed wobbles that told Herrin it was time to pounce. Though Jacobsen valiantly tried to hold the Yamaha rider off, Herrin was by now unstoppable. Slicing through the lap's final corners, he took his first victory of 2011 by .161 seconds.

"It was getting pretty crazy in the beginning," Herrin said. "A lot of guys were passing me on the brakes in Turn 1 just 'cause I didn't want to push in there too hard ... I was just trying to save my tires. I had to shave a couple tenths off to go into the puddles, but I think at the end it really helped us out a lot.

"The Monster Energy Graves Yamaha was working really well, and I'm really grateful we're on such good tires-the rains were phenomenal; we haven't used them since Road America last year and they were perfect. These guys rode a really good race, everybody did, and I'm just glad to be up here. It's a relief after having such a tough time this year, and I look forward to continuing on with the season with some more-consistent results."

"Josh and Cory and Dane got by me, so I just tried to stay with them and sit behind them and see what they could do," Jacobsen said. "There was like seven laps to go, so I figured just sit behind them 'cause it's going to be a long race still. I tried to break away [at the end] there, but Josh got me on the last lap. I really, really was pushing, but he just got the best of me."

Jacobsen was followed across the line by another first-time podium-earner in AMA Pro Daytona SportBike, as Beaubier had craftily dispatched both West and Westby, who finished fourth and fifth.

"It was crazy," Baubier explained. "I struggled a little bit on the brakes, couldn't really pass anyone on the brakes, and I was just watching them swap positions every corner ... it was pretty awesome to watch. Toward the end I started to get a little more comfortable on the brakes and started making a couple passes, and it was an awesome race. The front was skating around a lot the whole race, so I had to always make sure I went through a puddle on the straightaway to cool the tires down, but it was a fun race, that's for sure. It feels great to get on the podium for the first time in SportBike."

DiSalvo, Eslick, Josh Galster, Paul Allison and Tommy Aquino rounded out the top 10.

Checa claims pole at Miller

From the WSBK Pressoffice

Carlos Checa (Althea Racing Ducati) put in a 1 minute 58.315 second lap on a drying track to take his fourth Tissot Superpole win of the 2011 World Superbike Championship season and give himself the best possible starting slot for raceday on Monday.

“I really like this track, but the bike doesn’t so much," Checa explained. "We had some problems that we solved and I hope for tomorrow everything is going to be fine. We’ve been working quite well in the dry, and finally when it was getting dry I was able to get more grip and that’s the main reason I was able to fight for the pole. It’s a nice surprise.”

Only just behind was Jakub Smrz (Effenbert-Liberty Ducati), deposed by Checa with no time left to go faster.

“Carlos is good today so he deserves pole position," Smrz said. "I think we made a really good job today, the bike was better in the wet, there were no problems to be fast. Hopefully it will be the same in the dry and I hope to fight for the best possible position.”

Yamaha World Superbike team-mates Marco Melandri and Eugene Laverty completed the front row, mastering the damp conditions well when it counted most. This is the first front row start for Melandri in WSBK racing and was particularly welcome after he struggled in some earlier sessions at a track he had never seen before first practice. Laverty has now earned three front row starts in the past three races.

The second row is headed by Sylvain Guintoli, Smrz’s team-mate, with the top official BMW rider on show Troy Corser, who went sixth. Late faller in Superpole 3, Max Biaggi, was seventh for Aprilia Alitalia and impressive BMW Motorrad Italia Superbike rider Ayrton Badovini was eighth.

Row three is reserved for riders who missed out on Superpole 3, with Aprilia Pata veteran Noriyuki Haga going ninth overall, just ahead of Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team Superbike), who went 10th as the track dried out slowly.

Aprilia Alitalia rider Leon Camier was lucky to get back into the fray after a fall early in Superpole 1, but he made it back to the pits to take his second bike into Superpole 2 and then qualify 11th overall.

Leon Haslam had a tough day again on his BMW Motorrad Motorsport S1000RR, toppling over in Superpole 2 and being unable to make it further up the order than 12th.

After a surprise exit from Superpole 1 Jonathan Rea (Castrol Honda) was only 13th on the grid with his team-mate Ruben Xaus only one place behind.

Former double champion James Toseland (BMW Motorrad Italia Superbike) battled against his still injured right hand to go 18th on the grid, limiting his laps in the wet conditions after he missed out on the top 16 after final regulation qualifying.

Alexander earns first AMA Pro victory

From AMA Pro Racing

TOOELE, UT - Vesrah Suzuki's Cory Alexander captured his career-first AMA Pro podium in Sunday's AMA Pro Motorcycle-Superstore.com SuperSport contest at Miller Motorsport Park, skipping the second- and third-place steps on the dais to turn in a wildly dominant win. Seventeen-year-old Alexander made the most of his front-row starting position, taking the lead on Lap 2 and immediately running away with the race.

While Alexander may be relatively new to AMA Pro fans, his surname isn't; his uncle, Richie Alexander, is both current Team Director for the Michael Jordan Motorsports effort and a former AMA national road race champion. Corey did his family more than proud Sunday, leading 12 of 13 laps and crossing the finish line a staggering 18.873 seconds ahead of second-place finisher Y.E.S./LTD Racing's David Gaviria.

"We went out there this morning [for Q2] and I just didn't want to crash or create any extra work for my guys - I just wanted to get to know the track and see how it was in the wet, and it was really good, there was a lot of grip," Alexander said. "I was just kind of waiting to see what was going to happen in the race, and that's what I did. Benny went down, so I was just riding behind Tomas. Then I caught up to them, made my way around them, and I thought they would stay with me, but a couple laps later I looked at my board and had a 10-second lead, so it was really good. This was only my second time racing in the rain."

Polesitter Benny Solis (Roadracingworld.com) went into the race looking for a third consecutive podium, but ended up with a very different result. After leading briefly at the start, he diced with Gaviria for only a few turns before sliding off-course in Turn 9. Though he was up and okay quickly and eventually reentered the race, he suffered a second fall late in the contest. The single-race points-paying system ensured Solis won't go home empty-handed (for a non-doubleheader event, points are paid for both qualifying positions and race results, using the 20-position race scale), but his misfortune has allowed the rest of the field to draw closer.

Gaviria, meanwhile, made it his priority to collect championship points, maintaining a comfortable pace that kept him out of reach of the battle for third, which raged behind between Gaviria's LTD teammate, Tomas Puerta, and GP Bike Parts' Travis Ohge. Ohge had made an impressive charge up from 13th on the grid, and he wasn't done yet. Puerta and Ohge diced all the way to the checkered flag, Ohge getting by just before the pair crossed the finish.

Fifth-place finisher Elena Myers (SuzukiScoopFans Racing) also turned in an impressive performance, fighting her way up from 12th in difficult conditions. She likewise holds fifth in the overall AMA Pro Motorcycle-Superstore.com SuperSport West Division Championship, behind Sebastiao Ferreira (GP Bike Parts). Solis leads the championship with 112 points, followed by Alexander (101 points) and Ohge (72).

Sunday's Motorcycle-Superstore.com SuperSport race will be part of a special SPEED TV broadcast airing Monday, May 30, at 9:00pm PST.

The class' next round runs June 3-5 at Elkhart Lake's Road America, for AMA Pro Road Racing Round 4.

Matechuk wins thrilling XR1200 event

By John Hopkins

MIRABEL, QC -- Cody Matechuk held off six-time Canadian Superbike champion Steve Crevier in a thrilling battle for the win in the opening round of the Harley-Davidson XR1200 Cup at Circuit ICAR on Sunday. The race was part of the first weekend for the Canadian Superbike Championship by Parts Canada.

Matechuk had qualified on pole aboard his Privateers Harley-Davidson-backed entry and at the start of the race the Cochrane, AB teenager bolted into the lead with Crevier and Darren James close behind. Crevier grabbed the top spot on lap 8 of the 14-lap race, only to have Matechuk snatch it back two laps later. While James dropped back from the lead battle, Crevier hung close and at the finish the margin of victory was only 0.168 secs.

"We got in some track time on Thursday and that helped a lot," Matechuk said. "We made a change after qualifying last night and that definitely helped. I knew someone was there with me, I wasn't sure if it was Darren or Steve. It doesn't matter who I'm racing with, I want to go for the win."

Matechuk received the Performance Under Gear Performer of the Race for his winning effort and also set the race's fastest lap, a 1:28.922 on the penultimate tour.

Riding the MotoSport Plus of Kingston-backed entry, Crevier often showed Matechuk a wheel into turn one, and the Maple Ridge, BC racer may have lost his best shot at the win on the last lap, when the leaders encountered a gaggle of slower traffic.

James appeared to lose ground in lapped traffic on lap 11 and finished 7.640 secs. behind the top two on his Ruthless Racing / Deeley Harley-Davidson Canada XR1200. The North Vancouver racer was proudly flying the flag of his hometown Canucks on his transporter as they prepare to play for the Stanley Cup, starting Wednesday.

Fourth spot went to Samuel Proulx of Magog, QC after a quiet run on his Sherbrooke Harley-Davidson-backed machine, and Chris Harmon was fifth from lap two on aboard his XR1200 backed by Vision Harley-Davidson out of Repentigny, QC.

Stacey Nesbitt won a soggy second round of the Honda CBR125R Challenge on Sunday. The 14-year-old St-Lazare, QC rider moved up from fifth on the grid to lead at the end of the opening lap and she stayed in front the rest of the way for her first career series win.

Saturday's race winner Eric Green initially hounded Nesbitt and briefly took the lead on lap eight, only to crash out of the race seconds later.

Seth Van Dongen of Belle River, ON was second, 27.087 secs. behind and Stoney Creek, ON's David MacKay placed third. All three podium finishers enjoyed career high results, and it was MacKay's first ever weekend in the CBR Challenge.

Nesbitt now leads the class standings after two races with 81 points, 12 more than Austin Shaw-O'Leary, who finished second on Saturday but placed sixth on Sunday.

Proulx and Coelho nab Amateur wins

By John Hopkins

MIRABEL, QC -- Samuel Proulx of Magog, QC and Longueuil, QC racer Alex Coelho were winners of the first Amateur national events of the 2011 season at round one of the Canadian Superbike Championship by Parts Canada at Circuit ICAR.

Proulx led all the way in the Inside Motorcycles Amateur Sport Bike class to claim the victory on his Sherbrooke Harley-Davidson Suzuki GSX-R600, finishing 4.191 secs. ahead of Jean Francois Aubin of St-Jerome, QC on the Ricky Bobby Racing Team GSX-R600 and the Suzuki of Toronto's Edward Rudkowski.

In K&N Performance Filters Amateur Superbike Coelho worked his way into the lead on the Black Sheep / Elka Suspension Race Team Kawasaki ZX-6R and then pulled away to a 5.727-sec. triumph over the Suzuki GSX-R600 of Ryoun-Noranda, QC's Alain Lefebvre and Burlington, ON rider Jody Greening aboard the BFE / ProStar / Sturgess Cycle Honda CBR600RR.

The wins were the first national triumphs for both Proulx and Coelho.

Proulx started third on the Amateur Sport Bike grid but grabbed the lead off the start. The 10-lap race, shortened from a scheduled 14, was held on a damp but drying track and Proulx seemed to have the handle on conditions best in the early stages, opening up a lead of 10.262 secs. by half distance. But as the laps wound down Aubin, who had started fourth and worked his way up to second by lap two, started taking huge chunks out of Proulx's lead. He turned his fastest race lap on the eighth tour, a 1:34.622, by which point he was lapping up to two seconds a lap quicker than the leader. But on the final lap Proulx turned his fastest lap, a 1:35.279 to secure the win.

Philippe Bonin emerged in third by half distance and crossed the line in that position, but he was disqualified following post race tech for having unapproved electronic equipment on his bike. That elevated Rudkowski to third, while Stavros Grekos of Toronto edged fellow Kawasaki rider Coelho for fourth.

With the race distance shortened due to the conditions all finishers were awarded 40 points toward the championship.

Coelho only started ninth on the Amateur Superbike grid but quickly worked his way up to third place.

"I had a decent start and I made it through the pack into turn one and got into third place," he explained. "It seemed like as the race went on I gained momentum, but it was a hard and strenuous race -- this is a very physical track.

"I got the lead when I think the leader made a mistake going into turn two and I never looked back. The bike was well planted, the guys from Elka helped immensely."

Coelho turned the race's fastest lap on his final tour, a 1:27.270. The win was worth a $500 product bonus from series sponsor Mopar.

Lefebvre, who himself had started 10th and picked up the two-point bonus for leading the most laps, won a three-way fight for second at the line, edging Greening and Aubin. Brampton, ON's Trevor Daley took fifth on the Trevordaley Concepts Ducati 749.

After experiencing the thrill of victory on Saturday Kristopher Garvie was left with the agony of defeat on Sunday. The Garvie Racing / Canadian Kawasaki Motors rider had put his ZX-6R on pole for both Amateur races in his first national appearance. But he crashed while lying second on the opening lap of the Amateur Sport Bike race, remounted and went down again at the finish. He was unable to take part in the Superbike event later in the day.

Trombino back in winner's circle

By John Hopkins

MIRABEL, QC -- Frank Trombino found his way back to the top of a Canadian national road race podium on Sunday, taking victory in the Pirelli Pro Sport Bike Championship event that was part of the Canadian Superbike Championship by Parts Canada at Circuit ICAR.

The 38-year-old Woodbridge, ON veteran led all 10 laps of the race, which was shortened from a scheduled 14 due to wet track conditions, on his Suzuki Canada / Hindle / Sturgess Cycle Suzuki GSX-R600, finishing 36.676 secs. ahead of the JHP Racing Team / Picotte Motorsport Suzuki GSX-R600 of impressive rookie Pro Jeremie Hade Precourt.

Sean Huffman completed the podium on his Pro 6 Cycle Honda CBR600RR. The Kemptville, ON racer made a last lap pass of Terrebonne, QC’s Raphael Archambault to secure the third place finish.

The victory was Trombino's first national win since he took the Superbike opener at Shannonville Motorsport Park in 2002, and he gave part of the credit to his persistence in practicing in the rain on Friday and Saturday, when most of his rivals remained in the pits.

"I think that was about 50 percent of it," he admitted. "The track has a slightly new configuration, especially into turns one and two, and I was trying to get used to it."

With no qualifying and not even a suitable practice session to use for times to establish a grid, the Pro Sport Bike field was lined up based on past performance and experience. Last year's class runner-up Jodi Christie lined up on pole on the Jodi Christie Racing Honda CBR600RR, joined by Trombino, Alex Welsh (Z1 CycleTech Suzuki GSX-R600) and Darren James (Ruthless Racing / Deeley Harley-Davidson Canada Buell 1125R).

Trombino grabbed the lead off the start with Welsh giving chase, and these two pulled clear of the field in the early laps. It looked like Welsh was going to give Trombino plenty of trouble but near the end of lap five the Uxbridge, ON racer slid off on the tricky surface, leaving Trombino with a comfortable 20-second lead. Welsh had turned his fastest lap of the race on the previous tour.

"I knew someone was behind me [in the early laps] but I wasn't sure who," Trombino explained. "Once he was gone I just tried to stay focussed. I didn't want to ease up too much and lose my concentration."

Hade Precourt started on the third row but by lap two was part of a group contesting third place, led by Christie. The Granby, QC rider worked his way to the front of this pack by lap four and then assumed second when Welsh went down. The 17-year-old was lapping almost three seconds off the pace of the remarkable Trombino, but almost a second faster than anyone else on the track.

"It was a lot of work getting by those guys," said last year's national Amateur Sport Bike runner-up. "But once I got a bit of a gap I was able to pull clear."

Christie went down on lap seven, leaving Huffman and Archambault to battle for the last podium spot. Huffman got by last year's Amateur Sport Bike champion halfway around the final lap for his first national podium finish.

"There was a lot of standing water at the start but as the race went on there was a bit of, not a dry line, but a good racing line developing," Huffman said. "I had a good run on Raphael out of the Esses and I was able to get him just after that."

Archambault settled for fourth on the Archambault Suzuki / Parts Canada Racing Suzuki GSX-R600 and James ran a lonely race to fifth.

Christie remounted after his fall to take sixth and Welsh also rejoined, salvaging eighth.

Due to the track conditions and with the race distance reduced, all 12 finishers were awarded 40 points toward the Pro Sport Bike standings. With no qualifying points awarded, everyone is on even footing heading to the doubleheader at Shannonville Motorsport Park July 1-3.

McCormick wins National opener

By John Hopkins

MIRABEL, QC – Brett McCormick started off his bid for the 2011 Canadian Superbike Championship by Parts Canada in perfect style with a convincing victory in the season opener at Circuit ICAR in Mirabel, Que. on Sunday.

Riding the radX HD / BMW Motorrad Canada BMW S1000RR the Saskatoon racer started from pole and led all 20 laps around the 2.8km (1.68-mile) track. He completed the 56km (33.6-mile) race in 27 minutes, 58.357 seconds for an average speed of 120.117km/h (72.070 mph).

Andrew Nelson of Kars, Ont. finished second on the Nelson Racing / GymMax / Monette Sport BMW S1000RR, 10.800 secs. behind McCormick and defending national champion Jordan Szoke of Brantford, Ont. placed third riding the Competition Systems Kawasaki Race Team Kawasaki ZX-10R.

“I really don’t think it could have gone any better,” said the 19-year-old McCormick, who also won the Superbike race at Circuit ICAR in 2009. “I got a good start and wanted to put my head down and try and pull away as quickly as I could. We came here with a pretty solid base set up so we didn’t have a lot of work to do to get the bike working around here.”

After finishing second in the 2009 Canadian Superbike Championship McCormick competed in the United States last season, but is back in Canada for another shot at the national title.

“It’s great to be back and I’m happy to be here,” said McCormick, who set the race’s fastest lap at 1:22.855 on his third tour. “This is a great way to return to Canada, with a big win.”

Szoke looked poised to take a run at McCormick but began experiencing handling problems just past quarter-distance and slipped back into the clutches of a group consisting of Nelson, Michael Ferreira (radX HD / BMW Motorrad Canada BMW S1000RR), Francis Martin (Couturier Racing BMW S1000RR) and Alex Welsh (Z1 CycleTech Suzuki GSX-R600).

Nelson got around the seven-time Canadian Superbike champ on lap 16 and went on to claim his second podium finish at Circuit ICAR. He was third in the Superbike race in 2009.

“The tires were amazing and the bike was superb,” said Nelson, last year’s Canadian Superbike Championship runner-up. “I think we have a good package to take a run at the championship this year.”

Martin also got by Szoke but fell on the final lap, allowing Szoke to reclaim the final spot on the podium.

“The way my race went I’m lucky to be here,” said Szoke, who won at Circuit ICAR last season to start a perfect run of seven race victories. “We had limited time with the set-up because of the bad weather here and we went the wrong way. The front end was working beautifully the rear went away.”

Although rain limited dry track time for most of the weekend the Superbike race was held in ideal conditions.

Uxbridge, Ont.’s Welsh got around Ferreira on the final lap to claim fourth place from the Mississauga, Ont. racer.

"It was tough," said the former Pro Rookie of the Year. "I couldn't get much drive out of the corners and they were able to break away from me a little on the straights, so I tried to make up ground in the slower stuff. I thought they might slow each other up battling with each other but that didn't really happen and it made things tough for me."

Martin remounted after his fall to salvage sixth spot. He did have the consolation of being named the winner of the KICKER Kick-Ass Pass of the Race Award for his move on Szoke to take third place.

"It was just a low side, I probably hit a little bump," said the Sherbrooke, Que. former two-time Canadian Superbike Champion. "Maybe I wanted to get Andrew a bit too badly.

"The bike was great and I think when we get a little more track time with it we're going to be able to have some very good races."

Jean-Francois Cyr of Mascouche, Que. ran a lonely race to seventh on the CyRacing Suzuki GSX-R1000 and Jodi Christie took eighth on his Jodi Christie Racing Honda CBR600RR. The Keene, Ont. racer spent much of the race battling with Woodbridge, Ont.'s Frank Trombino on the Suzuki Canada / Hindle / Sturgess Cycle Suzuki GSX-R600 before Trombino crashed unjurt on lap 17.

Sylvain Dery of St-Colomban, Que. on his Alary Yamaha / DL Performance Yamaha YZF-R6 and the Honda CBR1000RR of Sherbrooke, Que.'s Sebastien Tremblay completed the top 10.

Hayes leads qualifying in Utah

From AMA Pro Racing

TOOELE, UT - Some familiar names topped the timesheets in Saturday's AMA Pro Racing Miller Motorsports Park qualifying sessions, setting the stage for epic racing throughout the combined AMA Pro Road Racing/FIM World Superbike BigM Weekend Presented by Lucas Oil.

Reigning AMA Pro National Guard SuperBike Champion Josh Hayes (Monster Energy Graves Yamaha) earned provisional pole at MMP with a 1:50.40 lap around the 15-turn, 3.048-mile road course. It wasn't all smooth sailing for the current points leader, however, as he experienced a slight mishap toward the end of the 45-minute session.

"I tipped it over in Turn 1 [and] the bike barely made it off the track," said Hayes, who wasn't injured in the get-off. "I tried to hold on to it ... I was thinking about how much work my guys put into this bike! But I went back out on the back-up bike to verify the set up and it was fine."

Hayes has gone two-for-two in 2011 qualifying and is looking to claim a third pole here at Miller.

"I'm pretty happy if I'm the guy they're always chasing," Hayes said, "and if I keep doing my job and working hard, we can keep the string going."

Daytona double-race winner Blake Young was second-quickest in Saturday qualifying, posting his best time in the final moments of the session and thereby jumping ahead of his Rockstar Makita Suzuki teammate, Tommy Hayden. The youngest Hayden, National Guard Jordan Suzuki's Roger, was fourth-quickest, with Foremost Insurance/Pegram Racing's Larry Pegram rounding out the top-five.

Final qualifying for the class kicks off at 9:35am MDT Sunday in preparation for Monday's National Guard SuperBike race.

In AMA Pro Daytona SportBike, Team Latus Motors Racing's Jason DiSalvo continued his trend of class dominance by claiming today's provisional pole. DiSalvo has yet to be beaten this season, having earned victory at the opening Daytona 200 round then backed it up by doing the double at Infineon Raceway's Round 2.

DiSalvo jumped to the top of the chart early in the session, throwing his quickest lap in just before the clock ran out to consolidate his advantage.

"The lap felt comfortable and we had a fairly heavy fuel load," said DiSalvo. "I rode both Team Latus Ducatis this morning, but it was on the 2011 model that we qualified today."

Celtic Racing/Fast by Ferracci's P.J. Jacobson posted the second-fastest time of the session, with Monster Energy Graves Yamaha rider Josh Herrin just behind. Former AMA Pro Motorcycle-Superstore.com SuperSport standout Cameron Beaubier (GP Bike Parts Racing Yamaha) was fourth-quickest, followed by Triple Crown Industries' Paul Allison.

Daytona SportBike will run its second qualifying session Sunday at 8:40am MDT, and will race at 4:00pm.

In the AMA Pro Motorcycle-Superstore.com SuperSport class, Infineon double-winner Benny Solis (Roadracingworld.com) amplified his recent success by notching the top time in Qualifying 1. Although a number of riders briefly appeared in the frontrunner position, it was a late lap turned in sprinkling rain via which Solis settled the matter. Y.E.S./LTD Racing's David Gaviria made Solis work for it, however, coming in just a few tenths behind. Vesrah Suzuki's Corey Alexander was third-quickest on the day, with Y.E.S./LTD Racing's Puerta fourth and Nadr Riad (SKR Inc.) fifth.

In the AMA Pro Vance & Hines XR1200 class, Drag Specialties rider Michael Barnes took advantage of his prior MMP experience to set the provisional pole for Monday's 1:10pm race. Infineon Raceway's XR1200 winner, Chris Fillmore (RMR Bruce Rossmeyer Daytona Racing) took the second slot, having headed the timesheets until Barnes knocked him off. Californian Chase McFarland came in third; Barnes' teammate, Steve Rapp, was fourth; and J&P Cycles Michael Beck was fifth.

Final qualifying starts Sunday at 10:25am MDT.

Checa rules on first day at Miller

From the WSBK Pressoffice

Carlos Checa continued his brilliant first day form on the Althea Racing Ducati machine in World Superbike Championship action at Miller Motorsports Park on Saturday, the points leader and fastest rider in the first free session blasting his way to a time of 1 minute, 48.260 seconds and provisional pole.

With a few drops of rain appearing towards the end of the session, but not sufficient to disturb normal proceedings, the time that Checa set in the early phase was a full eight-tenths of a second clear of the one recorded by the next man, Leon Camier (Aprilia Alitalia). The young Brit was competitive enough to end the session just ahead of his team-mate and last year's double winner at Miller, Max Biaggi.

Kawasaki Racing Team's Tom Sykes put together a quick lap to earn the final place on the provisional front row, just a tenth behind Biaggi. With the possibility of rain looming for the second day of action the top riders were keen to get a fast lap in on day one to ensure qualification into the Tissot Superpole contest.

Other riders who featured well up in the one-hour session were Aussie Troy Corser (BMW Motorrad Motorsport) in fifth, followed by Jonathan Rea (Castrol Honda), Jakub Smrz (Effenbert-Liberty Ducati) and Eugene Laverty (Yamaha World Superbike), who make up the provisional second row.

Michel Fabrizio, who is suffering from a heavy bout of flu, was next up in ninth for Suzuki Alstare, with Ayrton Badovini (BMW Motorrad Italia SBK) completing the top 10.

Wildcard rider Josh Waters took his Yoshimura Suzuki to a fine 15th place, one up on Corser’s team-mate Leon Haslam.

First time Miller man Marco Melandri was 12th on his Yamaha World Superbike machine.

Outside the top 16 for the moment are Spain's Joan Lascorz (Kawasaki Racing Team) and the still convalescing James Toseland (BMW Motorrad Italia SBK) in 17th and 18th places, respectively.

Matechuk on XR1200 pole

By John Hopkins

MIRABEL, QC -- Cody Matechuk of Cochrane, AB took the Tactical Products Canada Pole Award in the Harley-Davidson XR1200 Cup class of the Canadian Superbike Championship by Parts Canada at Circuit ICAR on Saturday.

The former Amateur National Champion and 2010 Pro Rookie of the Year turned a time of 1:30.433 around the 2.8km track on his Privateers Harley-Davidson-supported entry. Matechuk will receive a Luminox timepiece with an MSRP of over $400.

North Vancouver’s Darren James qualified second at 1:30.701 on the Ruthless Racing XR1200 and Maple Ridge, B.C. racer Steve Crevier was third at 1:32.270 on the MotoSport Plus of Kingston-backed machine.

Matechuk steadily lowered his times during the 20-minute session, which was held on a dry track after rain throughout Friday and on Saturday morning had limited running.

"With about six minutes left we made a change and got in a couple more quick laps," Matechuk said. "We wanted to get it over the bumps better in the rear, it was feeling a little mushy. We stiffened it up and settled it back down.

"We got eight or 10 laps in on a dry track on Thursday and that helped. I got an idea of the track."

Samuel Proulx of Magog, QC completes the front row for Sunday's race after turning a 1:33.366 on his Sherbrooke Harley-Davidson entry.

In other action on Saturday, Eric Green of Richmond, ON was the first race winner of the 2011 Canadian Superbike Championship by Parts Canada season, taking a comfortable 3.851-sec. victory in the 10-lap Honda CBR125R Challenge race.

Austin Shaw-O’Leary of Falmouth, NS finished second and Cedric Martineau of Ste-Catherine, QC completed the podium.

Green started on the front row and led all 10 laps of the race, stretching his lead to as much as five seconds at half distance.

Shaw-O'Leary made a superb start from seventh on the grid to run third behind Green and Martineau after the first lap, finally passing the Quebec rider for second on lap six.

Scott Lingelbach of Wellesley, ON finished fourth and St-Lazare, QC's Stacey Nesbitt completed the top five.

The Honda CBR125R Challenge competitors will do battle again on Sunday morning.

Dream debut double for Garvie

By John Hopkins

MIRABEL, QC -- Kristopher Garvie's national Amateur career couldn't have got off to a better start at Circuit ICAR on Saturday.

The 27-year-old from Caledon, Ont. scored an impressive double by claiming pole position for both the Inside Motorcycles Amateur Sport Bike and K&N Filters Amateur Superbike events this weekend.

Riding a Kawasaki ZX-6R, Garvie turned a lap at 1:26.834 around the 2.8km airport circuit in Amateur Superbike qualifying. A little earlier in the afternoon he had managed a 1:28.334 in the Amateur Sport Bike class.

"I know you don't win the race on Saturday, but this is an amazing feeling," Garvie said. "I thought maybe I could get into the top five, but I had a lot of confidence in the package."

Garvie only got into road racing last season, competing in SOAR and RACE Super Series regional events. This is his first weekend as a national and his first visit to ICAR. As if that didn't put enough on his plate, rain washed out all of Friday's practice and Saturday morning's track time, leaving only the afternoon qualifying sessions for riders to get comfortable and earn a place on the grid. And Garvie is running an untried bike after bending the frame on his 'A' ZX-6R a week ago.

"It's been tough," he admitted. "Qualifying was really my first session out this weekend and first with this new bike. I was a little nervous at first but after I settled down I was OK. Once you get used to this track I think it's a blast.

"Jason Stirling's been helping me out -- putting on the tire warmers and stuff like that. I've never had anyone else pitching in before and it's been great -- just allowed me to focus on riding. My girlfriend Sarah's been a huge help as well."

Garvie will be joined by a trio of Suzuki GSX-R600s on the front row for Sunday's Inside Motorcycles Amateur Sport Bike race. Simon Hamel of Rosemere, Que. nipped Magog, Que. rider Samuel Proulx for the second fastest time with a 1:29.203. That edged Proulx by just .001 secs. Jean Francois Aubin of St-Jerome, Que. was fourth fastest, just over a second off Garvie's pace.

In Amateur Superbike, Trevor Daley of Brampton, Ont. was second fastest with a time of 1:27.362 on his Ducati 749. The front row is completed by Jody Greening of Burlington, Ont., who recorded a 1:27.881 on his Honda CBR600RR and the Kawasaki ZX-6R of Thornton, Ont.'s Amzy Nawaz with a 1:28.260.

McCormick on ICAR Superbike pole

By John Hopkins

MIRABEL, QC – Saskatoon’s Brett McCormick claimed the top starting spot for the opening round of the 2011 Canadian Superbike Championship by Parts Canada season at Circuit ICAR with a dominant performance in qualifying on Saturday afternoon.

Riding the radX / BMW Motorrad Canada BMW S1000RR the 19-year-old scorched around the 2.8km (1.68-mile) circuit in a time of one minute, 22.221 seconds for an average speed of 122.596km/h (73.558 mph) and claimed the $500 Kawasaki S4-R Competition Lubricants Pole Award.

McCormick also earned four points toward the Canadian Superbike Championship by Parts Canada standings.

Seven-time and defending Canadian Superbike Champion Jordan Szoke was second quickest but 1.237 secs. behind with a 1:23.458 on his Competition Systems Kawasaki Race Team Kawasaki ZX-10R and Andrew Nelson placed third with a 1:23.595 riding the Nelson Racing / GymMax / Monette Sport BMW S1000RR.

“It was tough getting down to business because we’ve had some delays with the weather over the past couple of days,” said McCormick, who was at the top of the time sheets virtually throughout the 45-minute qualifying session. “But we came here with a pretty solid base set-up and we were able to get down to competitive times quickly.”

McCormick was the race winner when the Canadian Superbike Championship made its first visit to Circuit ICAR in 2009 but missed last year’s event because he was competing in the United States.

Rain essentially washed out Friday’s scheduled practice sessions and Saturday morning’s track time, meaning qualifying was the first opportunity competitors had to prepare for Sunday’s 20-lap feature race. Instead of the traditional Pirelli SuperPole top 10 qualifying run-off the Superbike competitors ran together in a 45-minute session.

Szoke was third in the running order late in the qualifying period but snuck ahead of Nelson with just over a minute remaining.

“We’ve got a brand new motorcycle this year and we were counting on getting a couple of days of track time with it, but obviously didn’t have a chance,” explained the Brantford, Ont. racer, who won last year’s Superbike event at Circuit ICAR. “I think we were getting closer toward the end of the session and we’ll have a good race pace.”

This marks the third straight year Nelson has qualified on the Superbike front row at Circuit ICAR and the Kars, Ont. racer finished on the podium in 2009.

“This is a tricky track to get used to and sometimes it’s just a case of holding on tight and getting it done, and I seem to be pretty good at that,” Nelson said. “We put on a new rear tire right at the end of the session and that seemed to help the rear grip.”

Michael Ferreira of Mississauga, Ont. made a late charge to snatch the final spot on the front row aboard the second radX / BMW Motorrad Canada BMW S1000RR with a time of 1:23.914. That pushed Uxbridge, Ont.’s Alex Welsh to fifth spot on the Z1 CycleTech Suzuki GSX-R600 with a 1:24.150.

Welsh will be joined on the second row for Sunday’s race by Sherbrooke, Que.’s Francis Martin (Couturier Racing BMW S1000RR), who recorded a 1:24.672, and Keene, Ont. racer Jodi Christie (Jodi Christie Racing Honda CBR600RR), who turned a lap at 1:25.045.

The Superbikes were given a fitting prelude to their qualifying battle with a 10-minute display by the Snowbirds Air Demonstration team immediately before the start of their session.

The Kawasaki S4-R Competition Lubricants Pole Award was not decided in the Pirelli Pro Sport Bike class as that qualifying session was cancelled due to poor weather. A starting line-up for the race will be established on Sunday morning.

Arai, Icon tie in helmet ranking

From J.D. Power and Associates

WESTLAKE VILLAGE, CA — Motorcycle helmet owners are increasingly likely to purchase their helmet online, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2011 U.S. Motorcycle Helmet Satisfaction Study.

The study finds that nearly one-fourth (23%) of motorcycle helmet owners purchase their helmet on the Internet, compared with 20 percent in 2010. In 2002, less than 10 years ago, this proportion was just 4 percent.

“While the dealership is still the main source for a majority of helmets purchased, it’s clear that customers are continuing to shift to the online channel to purchase their motorcycle helmets,” said Brent Gruber, senior manager of the powersports practice at J.D. Power and Associates. “The percentage of helmets purchased online has increased steadily during the past 10 years. As a result, it’s crucial to ensure that dealers have an e-commerce website available for customer use as their preferences change.”

The study measures overall satisfaction of motorcyclists with their new helmet across 11 attributes: quietness; ventilation/air flow; de-fogging performance; face shield effectiveness of keeping wind out; face shield resistance to scratching; ease of replacing face shield; scratch resistance of shell; color/graphic design; weight; ease of fastening the strap; and fit and comfort.

For a 13th consecutive year, Arai ranks highest in customer satisfaction, and ties with Icon with a score of 852 on a 1,000-point scale. Arai performs well across all 11 attributes, particularly in fit and comfort and face shield effectiveness of keeping wind out. Icon performs particularly well in colour/graphic design. Shoei follows in the rankings with a score of 831 and performs well in ease of replacing the face shield.

The study also finds the following key trends:

* Overall satisfaction across the industry continues to improve to an average of 788 in 2011, reaching its highest level since the study’s inception in 1999.
* The average helmet purchase price this year remains consistent with 2010—$209 in 2011, compared with $206 last year. In fact, the average price paid for a new helmet has remained relatively constant since 2007, when the average price was $203.
* With a consistent increase in the median age of new helmet owners since 2000, this year’s study shows the highest median age to date — 48 years.

The 2011 U.S. Motorcycle Helmet Satisfaction Study is based on responses from 4,820 purchasers of new 2009 and 2010 model-year motorcycles who provided information about their most recent helmet purchase experience and helmet use. The study was fielded between August and October 2010.

Headquartered in Westlake Village, CA, J.D. Power and Associates is a global marketing information services company providing forecasting, performance improvement, social media and customer satisfaction insights and solutions.

Rossi tests Ducati GP12 at Mugello

From Ducati Press

In warm and sunny conditions, Valentino Rossi climbed back aboard the Desmosedici GP12, turning 60 laps during the third and final day of a Ducati test at the Mugello circuit last Thursday.

As usual, technical director Filippo Preziosi led the Ducati test team, which had also worked with Franco Battaini and Vittoriano Guareschi over the previous two days.

It was Rossi’s second test with the GP12, and he used the opportunity not only to check the first few updates to the bike, carried out according to the instructions of Valentino and teammate Nicky Hayden, but also to enjoy the Tuscan circuit’s new surface.

"I’m pleased, because it was a positive test,” said Rossi at day’s end. “We took full advantage of the time we had, because the track and weather conditions were perfect.

"I liked the new asphalt a lot. The surface is smooth, those holes that I knew so well are now gone, and the grip is fantastic. I must say they’ve done a great job, because if it’s possible, riding here at Mugello is now even better than before. I’m happy to have come back here to test after my injury last year, because it was a nice feeling and a good day.

"We started around 11:00 this morning, and we completed 60 laps in all — many kilometers without any problems, either physical or with the GP12. We tested everything that Filippo had planned to try, and we’re satisfied because, although we’re still at a pretty early stage, we’re going in the right direction.”

“We completed our second day of testing the GP12 with Vale,” said Preziosi. “I must say it’s a strange sensation, but also a really nice one, to be here at Mugello with Valentino, on a track where we’ve been rivals so many times in the past.

"We worked on the electronics and various other updates to next season’s bike, some of which were made following the requests that Vale and Nicky had given us during their first outing with the bike about a month ago at Jerez. It was a useful and positive test that will enable us to continue with the development of the GP12, which has some new details coming soon. Working with Valentino is always very nice from a technical perspective, and we were lucky with the weather, as we had perfect conditions. Vale also really appreciated the new asphalt: we have to compliment the folks at Mugello, because they really did a great job.”
